Play Time with Purpose
Today, my boss asked me if I wouldn't mind doing some research on Learning Management Systems. Well, of course!
You know what this means? I get paid to learn. I love doing this sort of work. I even get to play with Moodle on the company time. I get to compare features, and which one has more bang for the buck, and sum up my experience in a neat little report. It also means I have more knowledge. I'll figure out ways to break it, or make it work outside the documented features. It can be fun making something work beyond the narrow scope of it's design.
It really is the best part of being any sort of Technical Writer. I get to learn. And I'm an Info Geek, after all. I couldn't possibly think of a better job. Don't get me wrong, I like crafting courses, but I have a learning jones. Part of it is the thrill of being the local expert, for however small a time frame, I suppose. But I can easily get lost in the weeds of learning something.
Researching something like this is using my powers for good. And few enough of us get to actually do something we're good at, and playing to our strengths is what makes a job less of a job, and more of a joy.
And this certainly is a good counterpoint to all the narration I've been having to do. That's my least favorite part of my job. I trip over my own tongue a lot, and talk too fast, something I struggle with when I do public speaking. Recorded voice work is less forgiving.
Research is FUN!! It's play time with purpose.
