Tortoise or Hare: It's November, Have You Updated Your Accomplishments?

It's only a couple weeks before Thanksgiving and the official start of the Silly Season. Have you written up your performance accomplishments?

Whether your employed or not, you should be document all the good work you've done this year.  While it's better to do this monthly, it's not hopeless.

Make a table with with a row for each month. Next to it, list specific things you've done that relate to your performance goals.  To jog your memory, go through your email archives, your blog(s), check team sites like share point, and your hard files.  If you don't have formalized goals, create a list of accomplishments based on how you saved time and money, as well as new skills gained, both hard and soft.  Don't forget to include instances where you've overcome obstacles, such as interpersonal conflicts, lack of resources, and initial failures. 

When you're documenting all this, note specific days and emails whenever possible, especially if your manager received or sent the email.  Note hard numbers as well, if you can get them. 

If you're not currently working, you can still do this, both with what you've done on the job, as well as your job searches. 

If you do this now, you have more than a month to tweak it and add additional accomplishments. 

Then, you can present to your boss, either using the formalized system, or by simply sharing it with your boss to make them aware how much you contribute.  This can help secure your current position, or lay the groundwork for a promotion or a raise.

And more importantly, it proves to you how valuable an asset you are to a company.  You're making it easier for your boss and your boss' boss to support your cause for retention as well as promotion or raise.
