Early Voting

Texas is a state that allows for early voting, and I did my civic duty and voted on Monday.  Not such a bit deal, I know.

But the fact that it was a 20 minute line in the middle of the afternoon (not around lunch time) gave me pause.  The volunteer helping control the line mentioned about 25% of Austin has already voted.  That's with five more days of early voting. I haven't been able to find formal statistics, although lots of news sources report "record numbers".

Today is the last day of early voting in Texas.

Last presidential election, I walked over the local school, about two minutes walk from my door. I got there early, before the polls opened, and there were already a long line.

According to a recent
Austin American Statesman article, "In 2000, 47 percent of Travis County voters cast their ballots early; in 2004, 62 percent cast ballots early. The numbers usually hover about 35 percent in primary and gubernatorial elections, but a record 51 percent voted early in the 2008 primary election. "

Austin votes.  So if you haven't, go out and do it.
