The Career Tool Kit: Not Just for Job Seekers

Does having a LinkedIn account make you feel a little underhanded? Don't want to join too many social media groups for fear your boss might find out?  Do you think your boss will read it as a sign you're looking to jump ship?  When you think about networking, do you think it's only for sales people and active job seekers?

It's a tough market out there these days, that's for sure. But keeping your career development skills sharp isn't just for active job seekers. It's for anyone who wants to grow their career, whether it's growing in your current job,  preparing for a promotion, or finding greener pastures, it's important to know what you need to take advantage of opportunities.

Or, as Louis Pasteur said, "Fortune favors the prepared."

Are you positioned to take fullest advantage of the opportunities that come your way?  Even if you're not actively looking, the career tool kit you bring with you can benefit your current employer as well. 

  • Need an expert?  Tap your network

  • Staying current in your field is always a value-add

  • Cultivating your relationships helps build bridges and reduce conflict

  • They can also reveal vital and other useful information (new products, opportunities, outdated ones, etc.)
  • Establishing your a reputation for expertise can bring in clients
  • It also builds confidence in you and your team internally
  • Having contacts in other business units helps you stay informed about your own organization
  • Your cocktail introduction works with new clients and team members

  • Keeping your performance accomplishments current helps with reviews (and raises, promotions, etc.)


  • And yes, it will help you when you are actively job seeking, too.
