Kick Off: Austin PMI Job Fair 2008

Yesterday we had the kickoff meeting for the Austin chapter of the Project Management Institutes's second annual Job Fair, held immediately after the annual Professional Development Day (PDD).  Most of last year's leads are returning, which is a great sign that we all enjoyed ourselves.  I will again be the Job Seeker Liaison.

You may be thinking, it's only May, and it's not until October!! Why are you starting so early?  Actually, we're starting a little late.  Companies who may buy booths have already planned their exhibition space budgets. And it's a softer market, with a lot of project managers in town, so we have some different challenges from last year.

I'm excited about it, though; I had a lot of fun coming up with materials to help prepare our members to make the most of the event, and some of the feedback I received from employers indicated that it paid off.  I may also have a bigger role in Marketing for the event; I haven't made a decision on that.

I will definitely be running a resume workshop, and organizing a "making the most out of job fairs" workshop (or, if necessary, running that, too).  It's a lot of work, but it's worth it.  I've always found it very helpful to focus my perspective and enhance my skills by doing more than just reading about something that takes my interest, or is related to my job. I guess that falls into the learn by doing category.

Watch this space for more information. Anyway, hope to see you there!
