Austin PMI Job Fair 2007: Success!
The job fair went off without a hitch, despite some potential ones. I have to say, the team we assembled kicked serious ass. It's the first time the organization put one on, and while some of us have worked on big events, none of us have been organizers.
We'd only less than three months to plan. We got 17 employers to show up, which was over our base 'need' goal. We hoped for 150 attendees. We estimate 250-300. An informal poll of the employers indicated that they all were glad they attended. All said they'd come back. OK, one didn't, but they left really early.
Some employer reps were intimidated with the targeted questions, people showed they researched, used their elevator pitches, and business cards. Three specifically said they found very strong candidates. I'd like to think my Job Seeker's Tool Kit series helped with that, in part because people told me it did.
No serious hitches, just minor lessons learned. We've identified some things to improve for next year, but we really set a respectable bar for next year's team. Comments included:
"Very solid candidates"
"Definitely did their research"
"Much bigger attendance than expected".
WE ROCKED.
Oh, and proof that job seekers need to be prepared: One company, Blue Fish Development Group, did extensive preparation for the event, including custom materials specifically for the event and the seekers. So don't think companies don't pay attention to little details. Blue Fish definitely does.

I loved you mention of Blue Fish at last year's PMI fair. Please send me a LinkedIn invite when you get a chance. I'd love to stay connected with you.
Best,
Cheryl
