JSTK #10: Apres Job Fair (Following Up)

Welcome to the next edition of the Job Seeker's Tool Kit, a series of articles written for Austin's PMI chapter members to help prepare for the inaugural Austin PMI Job Fair, being held in October. To see the list of the articles in this series, go here.

You’ve survived the inaugural Austin PMI Job Fair. We did, too. But your work isn’t over yet. Of all the things that can separate you from the pack, in a good way, is demonstrating your interest, whether there is an active opportunity or a potential future one. Remember to follow up on your contacts!

  • Stay in touch with new networking connections and old
  • Contact the Employer contacts with a thank you note
  • Make sure any follow up actions on your part, are completed quickly.

A “Thank You” note is a very small gesture that says a lot about you, and all positive. It shows that you’re good with follow through, reinforces the memory of you in the mind of the people you talk to, and gives you an opportunity to address anything left unsaid. It’s a demonstration of interest and etiquette that can set you apart and make the difference between follow up on their part… or not.

Even if you aren’t going to pursue an opportunity immediately, staying in touch builds the groundwork for future discussions. This applies to any networking contact, be it a networking event, job fair, interview, anything. And don’t just do it once, make an effort to stay in contact (without pushing it to stalker point).

That being said, The Austin PMI Job Fair Team is looking for feedback from you so we can gauge our success and determine what needs to change to make next year’s event even better! As we are project managers, we want to make full use of “Lessons Learned” so we’ve created surveys for job seekers, employers, and volunteers.

If you attended the Austin PMI Job Fair as a job seeker, please fill out the survey located at: www.opinionpower.com/Surveys/352050636.html

If you volunteered at the Austin PMI Job Fair or any of the related events, please fill out the additional survey for volunteers, located at: www.opinionpower.com/Surveys/523050640.html

    See you next year!!
