JSTK #1: Countdown to the Austin PMI Job Fair 2007

As many of you (NON-COMMENTING) readers know, I'm active in my local Project Management Institute Chapter. I volunteered to be the Job Seeker Liaison Team Lead. Of a team of one, so far, but that's OK. I've been neglectful about updating the journal as I've been working a new job, outside the field, but related to it (I'm helping project managers find jobs, that counts, right?).

As a means of helping the target job seekers prepare for the job fair and get the most bang for their proverbial buck. If you're currently looking for a job, or thinking about it, please feel free to check back for more articles. The category is "Job Seeker's Tool Kit" and you can link to the category here.

Louis Pasteur once said, "Fortune favors the prepared." Anyone who has to work for a living should adopt this creed as their own, especially when it comes to career searches.

As part of the inaugural Austin PMI chapter's annual Job Fair, the job seeker liaison team will be providing weekly emails every Wednesday until the Job Fair to ensure job seekers stay focused on preparing to make the most of this targeted opportunity, up to and including a reminder message on the eve of the event. They're intended to provide basic information, point you to other resources, and help you prepare without rushing.

To avoid spamming the membership, we are only sending this initial email and the follow up survey via the Chapter Announcements Net-Letter. To receive the rest of the emails, please sign up for the A-PMI Discussion on yahoo groups. More information can be found at www.austinpmi.org/austin-pmi-announces-new-yahoo-group-.php on the chapter site.  [NOTE: This is a closed group, membership required]

The content of these emails will be duplicated on a blog, at blog.jenn-brown.com to ensure you have access to them as needed.

The job seeker's tool kit includes the following:

  • Resumes
  • Networking
  • LinkedIn Profiles
  • Business Cards
  • Elevator Pitch
  • Interview Prep
  • Researching Companies
  • The Night before

If you get anything out of the preparation materials and workshops, the key things to remember are preparation and presentation. You want the hiring managers and recruiters to want to work with you, so you have to make yourself more attractive to them; this isn't about your aesthetics, but the aesthetics of your resume, your pitch, and your interview answers, etc.

A good comparison is with food at a restaurant. One is there to eat, people order what they want, but when that plate comes out, they eat with their eyes first. Plating can make the all the difference. One doesn't want to take the time to see all the good in a heap of food, they want it to look good before they sample it, and if it looks bad, they may send it back. The same goes for finding talent to fill positions; hiring managers and recruiters don't want to make the time, and often don't have the time to find out how perfect you, the job seeker, are to fit their needs. The harder you make it for them, the less likely they'll consider you, even if you're the best Project Manager out there.
